How to recite
A guide for someone who has never recited before: what to do, when to do it, and what Hanuman Jayanti is, honestly, including that its date varies.
If you are new, do this
- Open the Hanuman Chalisa on your phone. Keep one hand free.
- Read the Devanagari line by line, at a pace you can hold. If a word blocks you, glance at the friendly romanization beneath it.
- Read the Devanagari first. The meaning lines sit under every verse. Read them after the recitation, not during it.
- A full recitation takes a few minutes. There is no wrong way to begin. Regularity matters more than perfection.
How to recite a stotra
A stotra is a devotional text addressed to a deity, meant for recitation. Kesariya prints each verse three ways: Devanagari (the recitation text), friendly romanization (a readable Latin spelling, with no scholarly diacritics), and a plain-English working translation.
Recite from the Devanagari when you can; the romanization is there for the words you have not yet learned. The translation is Kesariya's own working draft, labeled as such, until a review pass marks it reviewed.
Sit or stand as you prefer. Many devotees face east. None of this is required. The recitation is the practice.
Tuesdays and Saturdays
Tuesday and Saturday are the weekly observances for Hanuman ji. Devotees recite the Hanuman Chalisa on these days; the Bajrang Baan is recited for protection and the removal of obstacles, often alongside.
The recitation set on Kesariya covers both needs: the Hanuman Chalisa for daily and weekly recitation, and the Bajrang Baan for protection. The Sankatmochan Hanuman Ashtak, the remover of distress, completes the set and is in preparation.
No prior knowledge is assumed. If Tuesday or Saturday is new to you, start with a single recitation of the Chalisa and let the rhythm settle over a few weeks.
Hanuman Jayanti
Hanuman Jayanti marks Hanuman ji's birth. It is an annual observance, and its date varies by region and by calendar. Different communities mark it on different days. Kesariya does not state a single fixed date, because none is universal.
What holds across regions is the practice: recitation, offerings, and remembrance of Hanuman ji's service. Check your local calendar or community for the date observed where you are.
